Artist Statement

Sorrow Clouds, features footage taken by Al Obaidly whilst traveling along the Tsiribihina river, Madagascar. The piece centers on the scale of destructiveness resulting from deforestation, a haunting visual poetry shown in extreme slow motion.

The film is accompanied by a melancholy ambient score by Berlin-based Rachel Davies and New York-based Lauren Flax, created through the layering of vocal-loops alongside synth sounds and live action field recording. Both film and accompanying sound piece are set to repeat endlessly, symbolizing the perpetual cycle of the natural world (birth, death and rebirth).
